What Causes Depression? It’s your parents’ fault.

It’s been proven that parenting styles characterized by low
expression of positive emotion and warmth are correlated with a higher
risk of depression. As are parenting styles that don’t reinforce
positive emotion. So, if mom and dad aren’t happy, and mom and
dad never told tell their kid that it’s okay, even good, to be happy,
he’s probably not going to be happy. Big surprise.
(To see the studies I’m referencing that were conducted by Katz and Luebbe check out this and this). It’s been demonstrated that a parent’s negative emotionality (being pissed off and grouchy) is associated with a child’s negative emotionality. Finally, it’s been shown that moms who dampen positive affect eventually causes their kids to be emotionally disregulated and have depression.
